Examples of a Strong Mental Game
Today we will take a look at examples of athletes that exemplify a strong mental game and also an example of what happens when the mental game suffers.
Athletes with a Strong Mental Game…
Michael Jordan will hands down be one of the best athletes in his sport and what made him so good was his mental game. Jordan did not back down from any challenge, was not afraid of any player, was willing to work so hard physically and mentally during practice and that when it came to the actual game, it was easy for him. One of Jordan’s most famous quotes is about how he worked so hard during practice so that the games would be easy. He is famous for getting in fights with teammates who were slacking during practice. He expected everyone to play as hard and put as much into the game as he did. To have those types of expectations of yourself and others, you have to have a strong mental game.
Peyton manning is another good example of an athlete that has a strong mental game and in fact, I would say Peyton’s mental game is actually stronger than his physical game. His physical game wouldn’t be what it is without the strength of his mental game.
An athlete whose mental game has slipped…
Early in his career, Tiger Woods was easily one of the best athletes in the world, especially psychologically. He dominated the game of golf with a sense of confidence and power that was unmatched. Not only is he gifted physically, but it is very clear that he is very meticulous of how he handles his golf game. Unfortunately, a series of injuries and events off the golf course have forced him to endure a hit to his mental and physical game. This is a great example of how the mind and the body are connected and why it is so important for an athlete to keep their mental game in tip top shape just like they keep their bodies in top condition.
