How to Use Sport Psychology Skills to Increase Performance
Sport psychology is a multi-dimensional field. White House Athletics focuses on the application of specific psychological skills in order to enhance an athlete’s performance. These skills include but are but not limited to confidence, focus, concentration, mental imagery, relaxation, controlling anxiety, setting goals, motivation and team cohesion.
A Sport Psychologist teaches an athlete or team how to use sport psychology skills to enhance their performance. White House Athletics works with athletes and teams to identify the skills that are most appropriate for them and then teaches them how to use these skills during training and competition. By applying these skills during a game or competition, athletes are able to maximize their physical skills and abilities.
When should an athlete consider using a Sport Psychologist? Anytime. Athletes can benefit from consistently using a sport psychologist. We constantly train our bodies for our sport but often overlook training our minds for performance which is equally as important. Additionally, a key time to use a Sports Psychology Coach is preparation for an important game, meet or competition. Athletes that have recently experienced an injury can especially benefit from using a Sport Psychologist.
An athlete can (and should) approach their rehabilitation from injury like another form of performance. By using psychological skills during rehabilitation, an athlete is able to manage pain, increase range of motion, strength and stability, build confidence, and ultimately return to their sport sooner than those who do not use psychological skills.
Sport psychology coaching is most commonly provided through one-on-one sessions however, team sessions are also available. Contact us today for a free 15 minute sports psychology consultation or book your appointment now.
