Psychology – The Next “Big Thing” In Athletics

Psychology – The Next “Big Thing” In Athletics

Why Psychology is the Next “Big Thing” in Athletics:

Sports psychology is the one area that hasn’t really been explored or utilized to its full potential. Its gone through a craze of hydration drinks, nutrition, strength and conditioning training, etc. For many years, sports have been so focused on the physical element of what an athlete can produce such as record breaking rushing yards, number of three-pointers made in a game, number of minutes played, etc. yet we don’t ask how did that accomplish that? Physically, a body can only be pushed so far. So how did Tim Duncan come to win five NBA titles, how did Michael Phelps break all of those records and win so many medals? Athletes like Duncan and Phelps perform to their maximum potential because they are not only strong physically, but mentally as well.

Every kid dreams of hitting the game winning home run or field goal, basket, etc. to win the game but the reality is that very few people grow up. Far too often the athlete isn’t the hero and misses. That’s a large burden to take on if you are not mentally strong. It’s not just the dreamers this happens to either though. Many athletes struggle with slumps, break under pressure or can’t perform when the stakes are high. Those are the types of situations or mental blocks that a sports psychology coach can help with. Those are the types of athletes we know have the potential to be even better than they already are.
